LOS ANGELES, CA - NOVEMBER 29: Notre Dame Fig...

Head coach Charlie Weis was fired by Notre Dame on Monday after several disappointing seasons and amid a horrid four-game losing streak. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick made the announcement public via a press release:

“We have great expectations for our football program, and we have not been able to meet those expectations.”

On Sunday, Swarbrick suggested to university president Rev. John Jenkins that Weis be released.  He has six years remaining on his contract and leaves with a 35-27 record over the course of five seasons, which is among the worst of any past Fighting Irish head coach.

Assistant head coach Rob Ianello will take over until a new coach is brought on.

Two of the mentioned prospects for replacing Weis, Florida’s Urban Meyer and Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops, have already stated that they intend to remain where that are currently.

In a conference call on Monday afternoon, Stoops was quoted as saying: “I’m going to be at Oklahoma next year, so I can’t be at two places at once.”

Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly has been mentioned, along with Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh, TCU’s Gary Patterson, and former Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick.
