In the latest sign that strange things are afoot at the Circle K, the co-chairmen of the NFL’s committee on brain injuries and trauma have resigned from the group.
Dr. Ira Casson and Dr. David Viano, who had been on the committee since ’94 and had been co-chairs since ’07, co-wrote most of the group’s research papers whose findings surrounding head trauma were met with hefty criticism from other medical professionals. All along, Casson had downplayed the link between playing football and subsequent dementia or cognitive decline, a belief highly criticized by many players and even Congress.
In a memo to the league, Roger Goodell said that Casson and Viano would “continue to assist the committee,” but offered no details as to the nature of any future relationship.
A league spokesperson has confirmed that Casson and Viano will no longer be serve on the committee.
