Florida DE Carlos Dunlap was arrested early on Tuesday morning and charged with DUI, just days before its Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 2 Alabama.
“We are aware of the incident and are currently gathering more information,” coach Urban Meyer said in a statement.
It looks like Meyer will address the situation more specifically after Tuesday’s practice. He may end up suspending Dunlap for Saturday’s game in Atlanta.
Dunlap, 20, was taken into custody at 3:25 a.m. EST. He was then released on his own recognizance about six hours later. Judge Mary Day Coker admonished Dunlap for drinking underage and warned that he may not possess alcohol, drugs or prescriptions that have not been prescribed.
He was also instructed not to drive a motor vehicle without a license and if caught doing so, he would be in violation of terms of his release. The judge then freed Dunlap without bond as he has no priors and no failures to appear in court.
Police spokesman Keith Kameg says they received calls about a reckless driver near campus and sent someone to check it out. When the police officer found the car stopped at an intersection, he noted that the red 2000 Chrysler wasn’t moving even though the lights were green.
Dunlap was then found slumped over and asleep at the wheel.
When police attempted wake Dunlap through his window, he “would only open his eyes momentarily and then fall back asleep,” Kameg said.
The officer unlocked the door, put the car in park and turned off the ignition. Dunlap got out and “was very groggy and had difficulty speaking and listening to instructions,” Kameg said.
He smelled of alcohol, failed a field sobriety test, refused a breath test and was booked.
