Serena Williams has been fined for her irate, profanity-laced rant directed toward a lineswoman in the semifinals of the U.S. Open.

The Grand Slam committee has fined Williams $175,000, they announced on Monday.  The committee, however, decided not to suspend her from next year’s Open or from any other Grand Slam events.

It instead took the advice of administrator and lead investigator, Bill Babcock, by adopting a middle ground with the hefty fine and probation. If Williams should commit another offense within the next two years at one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, she will be automatically suspended from the next U.S. Open.

Conversely, if she does not commit another major offense within that same time frame, her fine gets lowered to $82,500. Even at the lower amount, it would be the biggest fine levied against a player for misbehavior at a Grand Slam.

Williams has issued the following statement regarding the matter:

“I am thankful that we now have closure on the incident, and we can all move forward,” her statement read. “I am back in training in preparation for next season, and I continue to be grateful for all of the support from my fans and the tennis community.”
