The Redskins fired Jim Zorn early Monday morning upon his return from San Diego.  The firing has also been confirmed on the Skins’ website.

Word on the street is that Mike Shanahan is the early favorite to replace Zorn. Rumors about the former Broncos coach have been running rampant for weeks now.

The Zorn firing is no surprise as the former coach was stripped of play-calling abilities back in October. The Redskins lost their last game of the season 23-20 against the San Diego Chargers.  They close out the season with a 4-12 record. General Manager Vinny Cerrato had resigned in mid-December and was replaced by Bruce Allen.

Zorn was 12-20 in two seasons as coach of the Washington Redskins.

About 2:45 a.m. Redskins security ordered all media to leave the parking lot at the team’s facility, with one security guard saying that was so Zorn could leave without being bothered. Zorn left Redskins Park at 4:45 a.m.

Redskins GM Bruce Allen said a statement that the “status quo is unacceptable.” Allen will hold a press conference at 12:30 p.m. EST on Monday afternoon.
