Blind Luck, the 6-5 favorite in the 136th running of the Kentucky Oaks, defeated Rachel Alexandra, last year’s winner, to win the big race on Friday.

Blind Luck went into high gear on the outside near the end of the race. When Rafael Bejarano hit the stretch, however, Evening Jewel was still four lengths ahead. Back in the clubhouse, the trainer of Blind Luck knew she was in peril.

“I was really concerned,” he said.

Bejarano was not.

“I knew she was going to show me a big kick,” Bejarano said. “The other horse was still running strong. She gave me an extra kick, and that’s why she finished.”

Blind Luck stomped down the lane for 200 yards until she was dead even with Evening Jewel. They went back and forth for a few strides before hitting the wire.

The flash went off and the crowd waited expectantly.  The image revealed that Blind Luck had won by a nose.
