Chad Jones, a two-sport rookie who was drafted this year by the New York Giants, had surgery this morning for a broken leg and ankle sustained in an early morning accident where his SUV crashed into a pole.

Jones, a 21-year-old safety, had surgery at LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans and was listed in guarded condition.  He was alert when he was whisked to the hospital and his surgery lasted into the early afternoon.

Jones lost control of his SUV at around 6 a.m. this morning on a major thoroughfare.  He ended up having to be extracted from the vehicle, but the two other men riding with him were not injured.

The Giants drafted Jones in the third round of the draft. He was a member of the Tigers’ national championship team back in 2007 and he was also a relief pitcher for the ’09 LSU baseball team that won the College World Series. Shortly after being drafted by the Giants, he was also drafted by MLB’s Milwaukee Brewers.

Jones just signed his New York Giants contract last week.
