Justin Verlander did not win the American League Cy Young – and it’s safe to say Kate Upton isn’t very happy about it.
On Wednesday night, Major League Baseball announced that Rick Porcello of the Boston Red Sox won the AL Cy Young for 2016 – despite the fact that Verlander got more votes.
The Baseball Writers of America Association evaluates votes on a “points-based” system, it seems. Even though Porcello got a mere eight first-place votes (to Verlander’s 14), he racked up 18 second-place votes.
Verlander finished the season with a 3.04 ERA and a 16-9 record. He led the league with 254 strikeouts. Max Scherzer won the NL Cy Young.
Upton – who is engaged to Verlander- absolutely blasted MLB after the announcement was made.
Check out her tweet – as well some epic reactions – below.
Hey @MLB I thought I was the only person allowed to fuck @JustinVerlander ?! What 2 writers didn’t have him on their ballot?
Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter was up for the 2016 AL Manager of the Year Award, but lost out to Cleveland Indians skipper Terry Francona.
Appearing on MLB Network before the results were revealed, Showalter was asked if he would have done anything differently regarding not using closer Zach Britton in the team’s Wild Card Game loss.
“Oh, yeah, I regret it. We don’t play with a net,” Showalter said. “Looking back on it, I just feel bad he’s had to answer the question.
“This is a guy who I think should win the Cy Young and should be in the top three voting for MVP. He’s a 10- or 12-game difference-maker on a club. Zach was perfect. He had the greatest year in the history of the major leagues for a reliever and not to get him in the game, there was a decision to make in the sixth inning, the seventh inning, the eighth inning, ninth inning, the 10th inning. If I had known how it was going to turn out I certainly would have done it differently. You need to get someone like him in the game and there’s no bad place to get him into the game.
“You look back on it and if you knew how things were going to turn out, you’d obviously have done it differently, but it didn’t and you have to wear it. I realize I’ve got a great seat to watch one of the great years I’ve ever seen by a guy and he should be recognized.”
Baltimore lost the Wild Card game to the Toronto Blue Jays in extra innings. Showalter took plenty of heat for not bringing the best closer in baseball into the game, despite the fact that the Orioles didn’t have the lead.
