Columbia wrestling team suspended over lewd texts

columbia-universityColumbia University has suspended its wrestling team over an investigation into lewd text messages that were reportedly sent by members of the team.

Sports Illustrated reports that Columbia started the investigation when reports surfaced online about the messages.

Official with the university described the text messages as “appalling, at odds with the core values of the university, and violate team guidelines.”

“The Department of Athletics has decided that Columbia wrestlers will not compete until we have a full understanding of the facts on which to base the official response to this disturbing matter,” Columbia University officials said in a prepared statement.

Screengrabs of the purported messages in a group chat were first published on Bwog, an independent student-run blog. Fox News reports that many of the texts included lewd, homophobic and racially insensitive language.

The university did not say how long the investigation would last.

The Rock will mark the occasion with a Tuesday appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

“I can tell you now that what this means is that I still have to drive in my pickup truck and change Jasmine’s diapers, but now I’m just the Sexiest Man Alive (too),” said the 44-year-old former WWE champ and father of two.

rhynoIt looks like Rhyno got gored.

Gerin, a Republican, lost to Abdullah Hammoud, a Democrat, for an open seat in the state’s House of Representatives.

The 41-year-old pro wrestler is currently one half of the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champions.

Hammoud beat Gerin by a margin of 18,097 votes to 9,999 on Tuesday night.

Gerin has been wrestling for 20 years, spending time in the original ECW, TNA and WWE.

He posted the following to Facebook after his defeat:

The numbers are in and I regret to say I was unsuccessful in my bid for State Representative, 15th District (Dearborn). But I was very successful in becoming closer to my community, knocking on doors, talking with residents, and just forming a bond.

I knew going into this that Dearborn is a Democratic district and it would be an up hill battle, a battle I was willing to take on. Myself and my volunteers created something out of nothing (a campaign), we pushed forward with honor and pride. I’m very proud to of had them in my corner. I’m also proud of my opponent Abdullah Hammoud, we agreed on some issues and disagreed on others. He and his volunteers worked extreme hard and did it with honor. It was a clean race that focused on ideas and issues.

I would personally like to thank every person that voted for me, I’m deeply honored to of earned your support and vote. Thank you!

One of the many things I enjoyed in my campaign was talking at schools in my community, something I will continue to do moving forward. The kids loved me being there and they had great questions. I know I’ve inspired them.

Hopefully I inspired you! So go to council meetings, volunteer in your community and just get involved. We all know it’s a great feeling when you make a difference in someone’s life.

So thank you for all your well wishes, and may God Bless us all.
